What a pony play harness actually is

Pony play, also written as ponyplay or human pony play, is a form of role play within the wider petplay and BDSM world. The person in the pony role wears tack: a body harness, often a bridle, sometimes a tail, hooves or a mane.

The harness is the structural piece. It wraps the torso with adjustable straps and buckles so it cannot be slipped off over the head or shoulders.

It carries D-rings so a partner can attach reins or a lead. Harnesses are used for restraint, for decoration, and in some scenes to spread the pull of a cart or line across the body rather than through the neck.

This is not equestrian tack. Search results for "pony harness" are full of Shetland and driving harness for actual horses, sized in hands and built for a quadruped. This piece is cut for a standing human body.

The terminology, because listings use it loosely

• Harness: the body piece. What this product is.

• Bridle: the head piece, often with blinkers and a bit.

• Bit: the mouthpiece, attached to the bridle.

• Reins: the lines running from bridle or harness to the handler.

• Tail and mane: aesthetic pieces, usually hair or faux hair.

• Hoof mitts or boots: hand and foot pieces that restrict grip or gait.

You do not need all of them. Most people start with a harness and a collar, then add pieces.

Why full-grain cowhide matters here

Leather grade is the biggest quality variable in this category, and the one most listings stay vague about.

Full-grain keeps the entire outer grain layer of the hide intact, with nothing sanded off to hide flaws. That intact grain is where fibre density is highest, which is exactly what you want in a strap that takes tension.

Here is how the grades behave under strap load:

Full-grain keeps the whole outer grain layer, unsanded. Highest tensile strength, resists stretch, develops patina with use.

Top-grain has the grain sanded and refinished for uniformity. Still good leather, but the strongest fibres have been removed.

"Genuine leather" is a marketing term, usually applied to lower splits. Stretches and cracks under repeated load.

Bonded leather is shredded offcuts held together with adhesive. It delaminates and is unsuitable for load-bearing straps.

PU or faux leather is a synthetic coating on a fabric backing. It splits at stress points and cannot be repaired.

Straps that stretch stop holding their adjustment, which means the fit drifts mid-scene. That is the practical reason to pay for full-grain rather than a cosmetic one.

Hardware and stitching

Buckles, rivets and D-rings are solid metal, not plated pot metal.

Every strap junction is double-stitched, and stress points are riveted as well as stitched, so a single thread failure does not open a seam. D-rings are set into folded, riveted strap ends rather than sewn to a single layer.

Made to your measurements

Off-the-shelf harnesses fail on torso length far more often than on chest circumference.

Two people with an identical 100 cm chest can differ by 8 cm or more between shoulder and waist. That difference decides whether a vertical strap sits central or pulls off to one side.

This harness is cut to your measurements at no extra cost. Take these five with a soft tape, over the clothing or bare skin you intend to wear it on.

1. Chest. Around the fullest part, tape level under the arms. This sets the main horizontal strap length.

2. Underbust. Directly beneath the chest, where a lower horizontal strap would sit. This positions the lower band.

3. Waist. At the natural waist, the narrowest point. This anchors the harness against ride-up.

4. Shoulder to waist. From the top of the shoulder, down the front, to the waist line. This sets vertical strap length and D-ring height.

5. Shoulder width. Across the back, from shoulder point to shoulder point. This keeps the shoulder straps off the neck.

Keep the tape snug but not compressed, and stand normally rather than holding your chest out.

Fitting and safe use

Leather gear is only as safe as the fit and the plan around it. Some points worth setting out plainly.

• Use the two-finger check. You should be able to slide two fingers flat under any strap. Tighter than that restricts circulation over a long scene.

• Watch the shoulder straps. Pressure over the front of the shoulder can press on the brachial plexus. Numbness, pins and needles or weakness in an arm means loosen it immediately, not push through it.

• This is not rated for suspension. No body harness sold as pony tack should take a person's full weight off the ground. Suspension needs purpose-rated rigging hardware and specific training.

• Do not leave a restrained person alone. Basic, but it is the rule that gets broken.

• Agree a non-verbal signal. If a bridle or bit is in use, speech is not reliable. A held object dropped on release is the common solution.

• Hands behind the back is a bad idea under load. If the wearer is pulling a cart or line, restrained arms remove the ability to break a fall. Keep the arms free for any scene involving movement.

• Check hardware before each use. Look at rivet seats, buckle tongues and stitching at the D-ring anchors.

Keep shears or a strap cutter within reach in case a buckle becomes inaccessible.

Skin contact, chemistry and UK compliance

A harness sits against bare skin for hours, which puts it in a different category from a bag or a belt. Almost nobody in this market talks about that.

Under UK REACH, Annex XVII entry 47, leather articles that come into contact with the skin cannot be placed on the market if they contain chromium VI at 3 mg/kg or more of the total dry weight of the leather.

Chromium VI is a skin sensitiser. Once someone is sensitised, later reactions can be triggered by very small amounts. The recognised test method is EN ISO 17075, whose detection limit matches that same 3 mg/kg figure.

Two related restrictions apply to leather goods sold here:

• DMF, an anti-mould biocide, must not exceed 0.1 mg/kg. It is a potent sensitiser and can cause eczema that is hard to treat.

• Azo dyes that release listed aromatic amines above 30 mg/kg must not be used in articles in direct, prolonged skin contact.

If you are buying leather gear for skin contact from any seller, including us, it is a fair question to ask what the leather is tanned and finished with. If a seller cannot answer it, that tells you something.

If you have a known chromium or leather sensitivity, wear the harness over a base layer, and patch test any new piece against the inside of the forearm before a long session.

How to care for it

Leather that meets skin gets sweat, and sweat is acidic and salted. That is harder on a hide than ordinary wear, which is why harnesses degrade faster than belts when treated the same way.

After each use. Wipe down with a barely damp cloth, then dry naturally away from radiators and direct sun. Heat drying makes leather brittle and permanent about it.

Twice a year. Clean with a leather cleaner, then condition. Work conditioner into the strap length rather than just the flat faces, and pay attention to the folds around buckles and D-rings where cracking starts.

Storage. Hang it or lay it flat, somewhere dry and ventilated. Do not store it sealed in plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mould.

Hardware. A spot of light oil on buckle tongues once a year keeps them turning freely.

Avoid heavy saddle soap, alcohol wipes and household cleaners. They strip the finish and dry the fibres.

Frequently asked questions

Is this harness for a human or for an actual pony?

For a human. It is pony play tack, cut for a standing human torso as part of petplay or BDSM role play. It is not equestrian driving harness and will not fit a horse or a Shetland pony.

What size should I order?

There are no fixed sizes. The harness is cut to your measurements. Send chest, underbust, waist, shoulder to waist, and shoulder width with your order, and buckle adjustment gives you movement either side of that fit.

Will it fit a plus size or a very tall body?

Yes. Because every piece is cut from your figures rather than graded from a standard block, there is no upper or lower limit in the way there is with off-the-shelf sizing. Long torsos in particular fit far better this way.

How long until it arrives in the UK?

Allow 7 to 12 business days for making, plus tracked transit time. You will have a tracking number as soon as it ships.

Will I be charged customs or import fees on delivery?

No. Duties are paid before dispatch. There is nothing further to pay when the parcel arrives.

Is the packaging discreet?

Yes. Plain, unbranded outer packaging with no indication of the contents or the sender's trade.

Can I wear it against bare skin?

Yes, that is what it is designed for. If you have a known leather or chromium sensitivity, patch test on the inner forearm first, or wear it over a thin base layer.

Can it be used for suspension?

No. Body harnesses of this type are not rated to take a person's full weight off the ground. Suspension requires purpose-rated rigging equipment and proper training.

What is the difference between full-grain and genuine leather?

Full-grain keeps the whole outer grain layer of the hide, which is the densest and strongest part. "Genuine leather" is a loose marketing term usually applied to weaker lower splits that stretch and crack under repeated strap tension.
